Friday 16 December, Friday 23 December, Friday 30 December, Friday 6 January and Friday 13 January.

Market Manager Peter Homan says Eumundi Summer Nights will be a great opportunity for locals to enjoy a relaxed night out, with market food stalls, art and craft stalls, and fabulous entertainment including live music, performances by comedic juggler Great Scott, craft workshops for kids, and free outdoor movies.

ELF (G) – screening Friday 16 December

Buddy was a baby in an orphanage who stowed away in Santa's sack and ended up at the North Pole to be raised by elves. Later, as an adult human (played by Will Ferrell), Santa allows him to go to New York City to find his birth father, Walter Hobbs (played by James Caan). Hobbs, on Santa's naughty list for being pretty heartless, had no idea that Buddy was even born. Buddy, meanwhile, experiences the delights of New York City (and human culture) as only an elf can. When Walter's relationship with Buddy interferes with his job, he is forced to re-evaluate his priorities.

THE MUPPET CHRISTMAS CAROL (G) – screening Friday 23 December

A truly superb Christmas treat for old and young alike. This is the re-telling of the classic Dickens novel 'A Christmas Carol'. Michael Caine is cast superbly as miser extraordinaire Ebenezer Scrooge, held accountable for his dastardly ways during night-time visitations by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and future. The ever-fabulous Muppet characters will have you laughing, and the music is stirring – just the thing to put you in the mood for the festive season!

UP (PG) – screening Friday 30 December

By tying thousands of balloons to his home, 78-year-old Carl Fredricksen sets out to fulfill his lifelong dream to see the wilds of South America. Right after lifting off, however, he learns he isn't alone on his journey, since Russell, a wilderness explorer 70 years his junior (and trying to get an Assisting the Elderly badge), has inadvertently become a stowaway on the trip. Together, they embark on an adventure, where they encounter talking dogs, an evil villain and a rare bird named Kevin.

HAPPY FEET (G) – screening Friday 6 January

In the world of the emperor penguin, a simple song can mean the difference between a lifetime of happiness and an eternity of loneliness. When a penguin named Mumble is born without the ability to sing the romantic song that will attract his soul mate, he has to resort to some fancy footwork by tap dancing his way into the heart of the one he loves.

CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS (G) – screening Friday 13 January

The most delicious event since macaroni met cheese. Inspired by the beloved children's book, the film focuses on inventor Flint Lockwood and his latest creation – a food processor that converts water into food. He decides to test it out... but things don't go according to plan and he manages to launch it into the atmosphere. It begins to rain food in the island. A television station sends a weather reporter to cover the phenomenon and Flint becomes famous. However, the greedy and glutton Mayor Shelbourne overworks the machine and the food becomes a menace to the human race.

General Manager of Eumundi Markets Peter Homan says PASSION FOR FASHION is a day focussed on the unique designs of the many talented stallholders in the market community.

“Eumundi Markets is a wonderful platform for emerging designers and Passion for Fashion is our chance to celebrate the talent and skill here at the markets”.

“On the Passion for Fashion day, visitors to the market will be able follow a special Passion for Fashion Trail on the day – a trail through the market that highlights around 70 stalls with a fashion focus,” Peter says.

The Passion for Fashion Trail will include men’s, women’s and children’s fashion, as well as jewellery, hats and other accessories.

A highlight of the morning will be parades of the new spring and summer collections from Boom Shankar, Momoko, Glag Ragz, Fabrigami and Truessence.

The designs will be paraded from 10am on the catwalk at Main Stage (in the centre of the markets, adjacent to the Railway Refreshment Rooms).

The market designer collections will be followed by fashion parades featuring original designs made by the fashion design students of Sunshine Coast TAFE, including Certificate II high school students.

Sunshine Coast TAFE Fashion Design teacher Jodie Araya says the designs to be paraded will include a range of calico wedding dresses, wearable art with a mother nature theme, and a series of upcycled garments that will be auctioned on the day to raise funds for Helping Children Smile.

“The emerging designers from TAFE have been encouraged to really ‘think outside the box’ with an eye on sustainability when developing their designs”, says Jodie. “Taking their pieces to the creative hub that is Eumundi Markets is a wonderful opportunity to engage with and learn from designers within the Eumundi Markets”.

The kids craft workshops will be run each Wednesday and Saturday morning market over the holiday period, starting Saturday 18 September.

Market Manager Peter Homan says The Original Eumundi Markets craft workshops are a popular activity with market visitors in school holidays.

“We’re really excited to introduce the kite making and decorating workshops, a new addition to our program for kids,” he said. “These are being led by local kite makers John and Marie from Sunshine Rainbow Kites, who sell their handmade kites here at Eumundi Markets every Saturday throughout the year”.

“After making their kites in the workshop, kids can then take them to one of the many park areas in Eumundi and test their flying skills!”

“The candle workshops involve dipping and then sculpting wax to make funky colourful candles,” he says.

“Our badge making workshop is also popular with young artists, who create their own design on a badge they can then wear home as a souvenir of their time at Eumundi Markets”.

While they are designed for children, big kids (teenagers and adults) are welcome to take part too – if spaces permit. Children under five must be accompanied by a carer – to help them with the tricky bits!

Spaces are limited, so market visitors are advised to book in at the workshop tent on arrival in at the markets. You can pre-book for a workshop time later in the day.

As the biggest and best market in Australia, Eumundi is renowned for its quality art and craft – with stalls selling products for visitors of all ages. “The climbers will be competing for the right to represent Queensland in the Nationals, and onwards to the World Titles early 2011, so cheer them on to victory,” he says.

“Climbers start from the ground and scrabble their way up specially designed courses that test five different climbing disciplines,” Scott says.

“You’ll see competitors ascend 20m in under 20 seconds and perform flying leaps from branch to branch with only and harness and rope,” he says. “One event even includes rescuing a 80kg dummy that is stung up 15m off the ground.”

Scott emphasizes that no tree will be harmed during this event as all climbers are also Arboriculturists who take pride in tree care.

“Special equipment is used to protect the trees and the rules even state that a broken twig the size of your thumb can end your day!,” he says.

Scott says it is important that members of the public do not try anything they see at home.

“These men and woman are highly trained professionals and have spent years in the Amenity tree Industry developing the skills to compete at this level.”

Sponsors for the day include Energex, Eastern Tree Services, Bandit Tree Equipment, Arborlink and Horticultural Training, and all will be happy to answer any tree questions!

The competition of tree climbing began in the United States 50 years ago to educate tree workers in best practice, new techniques and the importance of safe tree climbing equipment. Queensland has been running a state event for over 15 years.

The largest and most successful art and craft markets in Australia, the Eumundi Markets is looking forward to a prosperous future as visitors flock to the markets in appreciation of its quality, locally made and organic goods.

General Manager Eumundi Markets Peter Homan said the markets $120M annual turnover was a boon for the Sunshine Coast economy and the environs of Eumundi and its 1.6M visitors per year made it the number one tourist attraction on the Sunshine Coast.

“The Eumundi Markets are without doubt the largest and most successful art and craft market in Australia,” Mr Homan said.

“We have really captured the International and domestic tourist market as the reality is virtually everyone who visits the Sunshine Coast makes a trip to Eumundi Markets.

“In addition we are seeing a huge increase in the number of day trippers coming from Brisbane and south east Queensland.”

Mr Homan said there was a number of factors which added to the Eumundi Markets success and longevity.
“The quality of the stallholders’ goods, the landscape and market surrounds, the historic township of Eumundi which adds to the vibrant flavour and the world class musicians,” he said.

“Add to that the diversity of the product and vibrant atmosphere, the mix of food, art and craft, fashion and jewellery.

“Quite simply it is an icon on the Sunshine Coast and visitors and locals alike love it.”

From simple beginnings the markets were started in 1979 by two women, Christa Barton and Gail Perry, whose objective was to help the township which had just been dealt an economic blow with the construction of the Eumundi bypass.

The first market boasted three stalls with a modest turnover of $30.

And far from entrepreneurs, the two women just wanted to offer the townsfolk a place to sell their goods and produce.

However Mr Homan said their initial vision of home grown and organic has stood the test of time and seen the markets thrive to what it is today some 600 stalls which operates twice weekly on Wednesday and Saturday morning.

Today the markets have a number of stallholders that were there in the initial beginnings.

Lindy Bonwick’s vegetarian food and organic herb and seedlings stall is one such stallholder and said the changes have been amazing.

“In the early days it was really a hippy market – quite alternative with a few artists and organic food and produce which really catered to the locals,” Ms Bonwick said.

“It has really grown as the visitors have appreciated quality products, clever artists and increasingly a real appreciation for the organic food.”

“The whole vibe is different today,” she said.

And according to Mr Homan it is that ‘vibe’ that will ensure the markets continue to thrive in the future.

designers, the Eumundi Markets will be giving market visitors a chance
to get crafty themselves in the upcoming school holidays.

Market Manager Peter Homan says there are workshops that will appeal
to market visitors young and old, and will run the mornings of Sat 26
June, Wed 30 June, Sat 3 July, Wed 7 July and Sat 10 July at The
Original Eumundi Market.

“A workshop that mum and dads can get involved in along with their
kids is the Eumundi Paving Project,” says Peter.

“Use your creative skills to carve a paving brick that we will then
fire and have set into the pathways throughout the markets”, he says.

“This is a chance to get creative and leave your mark on Eumundi,”
says Peter. “And you’ll have fun finding your paver on future visits to
Eumundi Markets in years ahead!”

Crafty kids will also be able to get creative in ever-popular ceramic
painting workshops led by local artist Merrie Tomkins. While they
are designed for children, big kids (teenagers and adults) are welcome
to take part too – if spaces permit.

The holidays will see the introduction of a badge making
workshop – where visitors can develop their own design to then be
made into a souvenir badge they can wear home as a memento of their day
at the market.

Another special workshop addition for the upcoming school holidays
is a candle making stall, where market visitors can experience
the joy of sculpting wax to create their own unique, colourful candle.

“Spaces are limited in all the workshops, so market visitors are
advised to book in to the stalls on arrival in Eumundi,” Peter says.

“And while they welcome to get involved in the creative fun,
children under five must be accompanied and assisted by a carer – to
help them with the tricky bits!,” says Peter.

As the biggest and best market in Australia, Eumundi is renowned for
its quality art and craft – with stalls selling products for visitors
of all ages.

And when you need a break from the shopping, sit back and be
entertained by a stellar line-up of performers guaranteed to get you in
the groove.

There’s also a great range of alternative therapists (for mums and
dads looking for a massage or some health and healing), fabulous face
painters and a jumping castle for the kids.
