Vibrantly feminine, hip and insanely colourful – it's a description that fits artist De Shan and also her art.

Working in a range of mediums, De Shan's subject matter is broad, covering everything from abstracts and still life to portraits and caricatures.

She calls her studio “the Forest” because it is wild, untamed, and probably full of foxes…

De Shan is one of those artists who requires noisy trains and buses and lots of birds squawking and some fantastic music playing really loudly in order to create.

With a masters degree in Fine Art and a half a bachelor’s degree in Astrophysics, she describes her art style as ‘unrestrained pop-surreal’. She paints totally on instinct, usually with no master plan, and finds that the more she distract her conscious mind, the better, and the closer the deadline, the better.

Her studio is in Yandina (with a smallish gallery attached for the public to visit if they dare) and always has at least two dozen projects in progress, in varying states of "done-ness". She says she normally has to high-step (and even leap) over piles of creations to get to the easel… It’s her daily accidental work out!

De Shan's most recent paintings feature many different people and fairy-tale characters as if they were Blythe dolls. The large eyes in particular are the main focal point and although they have a doll-like quality, they feel more human because of their watery appearance and vivid reflections. The backgrounds all coincide with the subject itself, and allude to the sometimes eerie nature of a fairy tale, with an intriguing twist.
